New Tutorial: Photo Gift Box

21 Dec

It all started with a brilliant idea to create unique and personalized Christmas gifts for the special women in my life.  I bought some small 4×6 albums and scrounged up some pictures and spent hours making beautiful desktop photo calendars.  The reaction was fabulous.  Everyone loved them.  But the first thing out of their mouths was “do we get refills next year?”  DOH!  I’ve since learned my lesson and now make them digitally!  4 times less work that way!  Here is a sample of what this year’s calendars look like:

With my new personalized calendars finished and printed, I needed to create something to put them in.  Here’s how I created the perfect Photo Gift Boxes for my calendars.

Materials:

12×12 patterned paper or cardstock (cardstock will be sturdier, but a thicker paper will work just fine)
paper trimmer with scoring blade
scissors
glue runner

Instructions:

Step 1: Trim down the 12 x 12 paper to 8 1/2″ x 12″

Step 2: Use the scoring blade to score all the folds.
With the long side parallel to the blade, score at 1/2″, 1″, 7 1/2″, 8″ and 8 1/2″.
With the short side parallel to the blade, score at 3″, 3 1/2″, 8″, and 8 1/2″.

Step 3: Use cutting blade to cut along the score lines as shown.
With the long side parallel to the blade, cut 1″ from either side down 3 1/2 inches from top, and 3″ from bottom.
Use scissors to cut a tab on the bottom at the 3 1/2″ mark.

Step 4:  Fold along all score lines and use glue runner to adhere bottom flap to the sides to form a box as shown.

Step 5: Create a “belt” by cutting down a strip of the 12 x 12 paper into 2 1/2″ and 1/2″ wide strips.  Use scoring blade to score the strips at 2″, 2 1/2″, 3″, 9 1/2″, 10″.  For a “looser” fit, try to score the paper at slightly larger than the specified size.

Step 6: Fold both strips along the score lines.  Glue the smaller strip to the larger strip, then glue the ends together to create the “belt” as shown.

Step 7: Fill with your favourite photos, or with your custom designed photo calendar from Cup of Tea Photo Cards!
